ABOUT BOTULINUM TOXIN
The cosmetic form of botulinum toxin is a popular injectable that temporarily reduces or eliminates facial fine lines and wrinkles. The most commonly treated areas are frown lines, forehead creases, crow's feet near the eyes. Several other areas have been treated such as thick bands in the neck, thick jaw muscles, lip lines and gummy smiles.

Botulinum toxin is a purified substance that's derived from bacteria. Injections of botulinum toxin block the nerve signals to the muscle in which it was injected. Without a signal, the muscle is not able to contract. The end result is diminished unwanted facial wrinkles or appearance. Commonly known types of botulinum toxin type A injections include Botox®, Dysport®,and Xeomin®.
Once injected the toxin requires 24-72 hours to take effect, reflecting the time necessary to disrupt the synaptosomal process. In very rare circumstances, some individuals may require as many as five days for the full effect to be observed. Peaking at about 10 days, the effect of botulinum toxin lasts nearly 8-12 weeks.
WHICH PRODUCT IS BETTER? BOTOX/DYSPORT OR XEOMIN?
Botulinum toxin type A is the primary active ingredient in each product. All of the products last a similar amount of time, and they all provide similar results.
Each of the four neurotoxins have similar safety and efficacy profiles, but subtle differences do exist that may make one a better option for your particular needs. In the end, it’s all about your personal preference.
HOW MANY UNITS DO I NEED?
Unfortunately, there is no easy way to determine how many units of Botox you’ll need without first having a consultation. There are several factors that are considered when determining how much you’ll need, such as age, gender, and lifestyle.
Men often require more units of Botox than women which may be because men have a greater muscle mass than women. Women, on average, require between 30-50 units of Botulinum Toxin for a standard upper face treatment whereas men will require an average of 50-80 units to achieve a similar effect. The number of units needed will depend on your treatment plan. We recommend scheduling a FREE consultation so that you can meet with our physician so that he can answer any of your questions.
